Bureau Receives Dispute
Bureau acknowledges receipt and forwards dispute to data furnisher.
Investigation Period
Data furnisher investigates and responds to bureau with findings.
Receive Results
Bureau sends you results letter and updated credit report if changes made.
Follow Up (if needed)
Request reinvestigation, add statement, or escalate to CFPB if unresolved.
The Credit Dispute Process
The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) gives you the right to dispute inaccurate information. Credit bureaus must investigate within 30 days.
Step 1: Identify Errors
Review your credit reports from all three bureaus and identify inaccurate information.
Step 2: Gather Evidence
Collect documentation that supports your dispute such as bank statements, payment records, and correspondence.
Step 3: File Your Dispute
Submit disputes to each bureau reporting the error. Include copies of supporting documents.
Step 4: Bureau Investigation
The bureau forwards your dispute to the data furnisher (creditor) who must investigate and respond.
Step 5: Receive Results
Within 30 days, you'll receive results. The item will be corrected, verified as accurate, or deleted.
Step 6: Follow Up if Necessary
If the dispute is unsuccessful, you can add a statement, request reinvestigation, or file a complaint.
