The Credit Dispute Process

The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) gives you the right to dispute inaccurate information. Credit bureaus must investigate within 30 days.

Step 1: Identify Errors

Review your credit reports from all three bureaus and identify inaccurate information.

Step 2: Gather Evidence

Collect documentation that supports your dispute such as bank statements, payment records, and correspondence.

Step 3: File Your Dispute

Submit disputes to each bureau reporting the error. Include copies of supporting documents.

Step 4: Bureau Investigation

The bureau forwards your dispute to the data furnisher (creditor) who must investigate and respond.

Step 5: Receive Results

Within 30 days, you'll receive results. The item will be corrected, verified as accurate, or deleted.

Step 6: Follow Up if Necessary

If the dispute is unsuccessful, you can add a statement, request reinvestigation, or file a complaint.
