Why Written Disputes Work Better

You can dispute online, by phone, or by mail. Written disputes sent by certified mail create a paper trail, are harder for bureaus to dismiss, and give you documentation if you need to escalate. The FCRA requires bureaus to investigate and respond within 30 days.

Before You Write the Letter

  • Pull your full credit report and identify the specific item(s) you are disputing
  • Note the bureau name, creditor name, account number (last 4 digits), and the exact error
  • Gather supporting documents (bank statements, letters, identity theft reports)
  • Make copies of everything before mailing
