P4D Strategy Tips
- Never pay before getting written agreement. Once you pay, leverage disappears.
- Start at 25–30%. Collectors often paid 5–15¢ on the dollar for the debt.
- Insist on "delete" not "paid." A "paid collection" still shows for 7 years.
- Get it on company letterhead with an authorized signature before sending payment.
FICO 8 vs FICO 9
FICO 9 and VantageScore 4.0 ignore paid collections — so paying without deletion still helps under newer models. FICO 8 (widely used) still counts paid collections.
Ask your lender which model they use before deciding how hard to negotiate. FICO vs VantageScore →
