Critical Rules

Closed accounts still count for 10 years. Closing a card doesn't remove it immediately — but when it falls off, it can hurt.

New cards dilute fast. 5 cards × 4-year avg = 48 months. Add one new card → drops to ~40 months.

Keep your oldest card active. Put a small subscription charge on it so it never gets closed for inactivity.

Age of 15% of your FICO score. Combined with credit mix (10%), these passive factors are worth protecting. Learn about FICO →
